Community safety
Our commitment to health and safety and knowledge of creating a safe and healthy workplace can be transferred to the communities where we operate. Employees are also encouraged to apply workplace health and safety values at home.
We are involved in a number of community safety initiatives. Safe driving is a key focus for these initiatives, due to our locations in rural areas and the fact that most of our employees drive to and from work each day.
Our approach to implementing these initiatives focuses on promotion within our workforce and externally through community organisations, the police and government agencies. Where existing programmes exist, we provide support, funding and expertise.
For example, in 2007 we ran two community safe driving initiatives:
- Hail Creek Mine ran its 'Road Safe September' campaign in partnership with the Nebo Community Development Group. The programme focused on promoting safe driving behaviour on the road travelled by Hail Creek Mine employees and their families between Nebo and the mine site. Hail Creek Mine employees manned a driver reviver station and additional awareness was raised by radio advertising and word of mouth promotion. Read more in our media release.
- The Kestrel Mine Community Development Fund provided defensive driver training to all year 12 students in Emerald and Capella studying at Marist College Emerald, Emerald State High School and Capella State High School. The training took place during October and November in the lead up to Christmas, when traditionally road risks increase. Read more in our media release.
