RTCA helps build a preferred future for Clermont
Rio Tinto Coal Australia (RTCA) has been supporting the central Queensland town of Clermont to develop a practical and sustainable vision for the future - a 'preferred future'.
The Preferred Future project, managed by the Belyando Shire Council, started in January 2007, to help locals consider the future of the town.
As part of the project, Clermont residents, businesses and government representatives gathered to discuss what would be important to Clermont going forward, with an independent facilitator developing a comprehensive report to reflect these findings, based around six key themes:
• Business and economic development;
• Infrastructure, investment and transport;
• Leadership and capacity;
• Liveability and lifestyle;
• Natural capital and cultural heritage; and
• Community health and wellbeing.
The report recommends how Clermont might meet the challenges identified during the process and make the most of development opportunities, meeting its vision for the future.
"The Preferred Future project has helped the town of Clermont to consider what its needs will be in the long term," a Belyando Shire Council member said.
"By understanding these needs, we will be able to make informed, practical decisions about how to effectively and strategically use current and future resources in a way that will benefit future generations."
RTCA external relations manager Fiona Nicholls said collaboration between key groups in Clermont was key to creating a shared vision. RTCA's Blair Athol Mine in Clermont is due to close in 2012. Construction on the Clermont Mine commenced in early 2007.
"RTCA is a large land owner in the area and we recognise the impacts that closing one mine and opening another can have on the community," Ms Nicholls said.
"We have been delighted to work with the Council and the broader Clermont community on the Preferred Future project.
"The project has provided a more thorough understanding of the town's social, economic and environmental landscape, and we looking forward to continuing to work with the community to realise the opportunities identified."
